Yaskawa MARCOM product engineers were responsible for producing price books for their particular product line. Their team created these price books in Microsoft Excel, where the product’s pricing, description text, and photos were formatted accordingly. Although Excel is easily accessible, understandable by the user, and lent itself well to data and tables, it proved cumbersome and difficult when it came to page formatting. Yaskawa engineers spent hours formatting documents for simple specs or technical changes. As a result, price books were only updated when time permitted and were very costly to produce.
Ken Cook Co. created a stable template in FrameMaker, allowing Excel pricing tables and MARCOM data to flow in easily allowing pricing tables to be updated more frequently and promptly. This freed up engineers to work on other tasks and allowed for timely, more up-to-date, accurate price books for Yaskawa. Now, Yaskawa can revise pricing as often as needed throughout the year.
This process also provided cost-saving efforts for Yaskawa. In the past, updating a price book would mean increasing either the cost of engineering or the cost to outsource the project. The average price book would cost thousands of dollars each to revise. In the new system, the costs and term time were decreased significantly.
